Anthropic put numbers on it in a randomized trial published January 2026. Fifty-two engineers learned an unfamiliar Python library, half of them with an AI assistant. The AI group finished about two minutes faster — too small a gap to be statistically significant — then scored 50% on a comprehension quiz, against 67% for the ones who wrote it by hand. The widest gap was on debugging: spotting that code is wrong and working out why.
The same study points at the way out. Among the engineers who used AI, the ones who scored highest weren't the ones who used it least — they were the ones who asked follow-up questions, asked for explanations, and kept writing code themselves.
